Immerse yourself in the local community with service projects, independent study, and internships. All courses abroad award UC credit, and grades appear directly on your UC transcript to help you meet degree requirements. If you're on financial aid, you can use it abroad. Seamlessly built into the UC system, our programs abroad retain UC's high standards on everything from academics to safety. My semester abroad has undoubtedly been the most transformative experience of my college career.
For four months, I took courses in French and English supplementing the political science framework I developed at Berkeley. In addition to academic coursework, I also received an international education through peers and faculty. From Canada to Korea to Croatia, I came in contact with people from all corners of the world, each with divergent perspectives on everything from politics to food to sports.
Among the many souvenirs I brought home, I carry with me the lessons and connections that will last a lifetime. UCEAP Final Grades : The reporting and posting of grades for courses taken abroad will take approximately 90 days after your program's end date. Academic Residence Requirements : See complete details for your College's residence requirements, and the modification for EAP partcipants at the bottom here.
Declaring or Changing a Major : If you are thinking about changing or declaring your major, do so prior to going abroad. You must follow the procedures for re-admission to UCSB as outlined here. Going Abroad in a 5th Year : Students who find it difficult to study abroad during their four years or two years for transfer students at UCSB should consider spending a summer, fall or fifth year after their final year at UCSB abroad.
This might be a good option for students in demanding majors who have difficulty interrupting their UCSB coursework. Please note that financial aid may be more restricted in a fifth year. In some cases, it is less. Furthermore, EAP students are eligible for special grants and scholarships from UC, the host country, and other sources. Communication students typically study abroad during their junior or senior years.
Communication students should successfully complete the pre-major requirements and petition for admission to the full major before leaving on their EAP adventure, although they may apply in advance of completing these requirements. Students should carefully consult with the Communication Undergraduate Advisor to ensure successful completion of major requirements. Students wishing to do full year programs in their senior year need to take special care to meet both major requirements and the University residency requirements.
Transfer students are eligible to participate as early as their first term at UCSB, although this is usually difficult for Communication students. Communication students wishing to complete a substantial portion of their upper-division communication major abroad have a wide variety of opportunities available to them.
The upper-division Communication major is very flexible, without any specific required courses or sequences. You are allowed to complete up to half of your required 40 units in an EAP program. Students are not limited to just UCSB sponsored programs to study abroad.
Dozens of great programs are offered through sister UC campuses, universities, and colleges - too numerous to list here. Interested students in such programs are encouraged to investigate them thoroughly and work with a UCSB College or Academic Advisor to assure units awarded are UC transferable and applicable towards major requirements before enrolling in a specific program. Questions on how a student can maximize their time studying abroad should be directed to the Environmental Studies Academic Coordinator or Advisor by emailing advsing es.
