Update any device drivers as necessary. You can do this by using Windows Update or by going to the device manufacturer's website. If you have an uninterruptible power supply UPS connected to your computer, disconnect the connecting serial cable before installing SP2.
The installation automatically attempts to detect devices connected to serial ports, and UPS equipment can cause problems with the detection process. It's fine to leave your computer connected to a UPS for power. Some antivirus software might prevent SP2 from installing, or might slow down the installation.
You can try temporarily disabling your antivirus software. If you do so, be sure that you're aware of the risks involved, and be sure to enable it after the service pack is installed. Make sure you have enough free disk space to install SP2 even though much of that space will be reclaimed after the installation. If your computer is set to automatically install updates, you'll be prompted by Windows Update to install SP2.
Follow the instructions on the screen. If you aren't prompted to install SP2, follow these steps:. Click View available updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Install any updates listed as Recommended or Important , return to the Windows Update page, and then click Check for updates. Follow the instructions on your screen. The computer might restart several times during the installation. After installation is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon prompt.
You might see a notification indicating whether the update was successful. If you have problems obtaining the service pack from Windows Update, you can download SP2 as a standalone installation package from the Microsoft Download Center website, and then install SP2 manually. I will also be reporting this to PriceGrabber, which is how I found the reseller the first place.
Since I in fact built my computer myself only re-used the case, keyboard and mouse from the system I bought from a computer retailer , it should be OK for me to purchase and use an OEM version as long as I understand that it can never be transferred to another computer of mine and the only available Microsoft support would be the knowledge base and forums, I expect.
